How To Serve in Tennis – Step by Step guide
The following steps you should consider in order to generate a good tennis serve.
Position of the feet
The first thing you need to be aware of is the position of feet while serving. If a player has never got a formal tennis training, it is pretty obvious that the position of the feet may not be correct. The most frequent mistakes associated with this issue is to keep the tips of both feet facing forward. While the correct method is to keep the back foot parallel to the bottom line and the front foot to the right post of the net for right-handed and to the left post of the net for left-handed.
The continental grip
The second most vital aspect to make good tennis serve is the grip. Keep in mind that the right grip in the realm of tennis is the continental grip also known as a hammer grip. Meaning that you need to hold the grip like you are holding a hammer and going to hit a nail.
The pronation
After that, you need to learn pronation to get out of the hammer handle and generate good tennis serve. If you fail to pronate, all the balls that you hit will go outside of the court. The pronation is the rotation of the hands and forearms so that the palms face downward.
Throwing off the ball
One more aspect to take into account is that when you have the racquet in ready position, your racket should be pointed to the box that you are targeted to take out. At the time of throwing off the ball in the air, your both arms must be raised simultaneously. Remember that throwing off the ball by raising both the hand upwards is fifty per cent of a good tennis strike. If you throw the ball badly, you may hurt the kick.
Never Throw the ball outside your comfort zone
Depending on how you throw the ball in the air it could become either your ally or enemy. What does it mean? It means that you must not throw the tennis ball out of your comfort zone to hit it. Normally this point in a first power kick would be at a height where your dominant arm remains completely stretched to hit the ball and a little in front of your head.
You could use the forward foot as a reference and draw a made-up line upward to know where to hit the ball. Keep in mind that for all type of serve (Plane, Cut or Lifted) the ball must not be thrown at the same place. This example is considered only for a flat power kick.
The flexion of legs
The flexion of legs at the time of throwing the ball is another important factor you must consider. when the racket creates the loop behind the head and drives up to smash the ball, flexion of legs help you raise your body with the racket at once and get greater strength. Be thankful to the kinetic chain of the flexion and extension of legs.
Final word
I hope that these steps could be helpful in “How to make good tennis serve”. I must remind you that an article by itself is nothing but a set of words, sentence and paragraphs, by which you can learn what needs to be done. Without taking action, you will not learn properly. So go to the field grabbing a cheap tennis racket (As you are practicing tennis) in your hand and start practicing what you have just learned.
I hope If you do so, your serve will be substantially improving.
