1. Feel relaxed

It's true that it is your first day at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class and you have lots of confusion about how things would go. No doubt, initiating anything is the hardest part of the process. Just have confidence in you that you are here to learn step by step and every step will make your way easier.

Your instructor and teammates are going to make it even easier for you. Don’t forget that it is not only you who is having the first day at BJJ class, but everyone in the class is just a beginner like you. So just relax and try to focus more on learning and excelling in BJJ. Your nervousness should never let ruin your excitement. So be excited about the first day, wear nice BJJ clothes, be on time, and feel relaxed.

If you’re still thinking that this is hard for you to cope up with the anxiety related to the first class of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu then here is a simple tip that will surely work for you. It is always good to join something new with a friend, so bring your friend to BJJ class as well and then you both become each other’s shoulder to overcome nervousness.

2. Different kind of people would be there

Don’t make yourself worried whether you would be having a good partner or not. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class typically has people of all ages and sizes. You can choose the most appropriate partner at BJJ class, so scan through the class and look for the best-suited partner on the very first day.

If you are a woman and you are conscious that you would be paired up with a strong 80 kg man with big muscles who might be training for a couple of years, stop messing up with such thoughts. This is guaranteed that it will never happen. You will be trained by a professional BJJ trainer, so you have to trust him and he cannot do such an injustice to you.

3. Don’t wait to be fit before you join BJJ class

Are you delaying your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class just because you think you are not fit? Stop thinking like that way because there is good news for you that BJJ does not require any certain level of fitness to be met before you start it.

In fact, BJJ can help you to become fit with time and this is one of the biggest benefits of BJJ that it makes you fitter as you keep on doing it regularly. Moreover, there is another good thing about BJJ that it offers very comfortable clothes to wear, which means you can hide your belly under BJJ Gi that is a BJJ costume.

So, you should not be worried about being fit before starting BJJ classes and should only be focusing on joining it without wasting any more time.  BJJ helps you to improve your health and fitness and if you are overweight, it definitely helps greatly in losing fat. However, it’s a gradual process and you have to be consistent and patient for the expected outcomes.

4. Don’t ‘roll’ if you’re not comfortable

At the end of the BJJ class, the instructor offers an opportunity to practice the newly learned techniques. This activity is often called ‘rolling’. If you feel that you’re a little uncomfortable with this practice, don’t be worried as no one is going to compel you for it.

Just be comfortable and sit aside and watch how others are doing it. It can help to avoid any injury as well which may happen at the very beginning of your BJJ career. However, it is a good practice to at least socialize with your classmates and take part in productive discussions especially that are related to BJJ.

5. Always interrogate

If you remember your school or college, teachers always encourage students to participate in class and ask questions. Remember, asking questions is the key to success that you should work on the right from the first BJJ class. If you’re not sure about anything, no doubt how small it is, always ask your trainer about it.

Trust me, you are under your professional trainer’s guidance and he will never let you down for asking questions. In fact, instructors like to be interrogated about anything they are teaching. No matter you feel weird or confident about asking questions in the class, your instructor would love it and soon you will see that you will be his favorite for being an attentive and keen learner.

These are the five essential tips that you should apply on the first day of your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class to have a rocking start. I can bet you can rock with these hand-on tips in your first BJJ class.
